Common Mallow
Malva sylvestris
1:1 Ethanol/Distilled H2O Spagyric tincture of fresh organic Mallow – whole plant used – with salt principle added.
Planetary ruler: Moon
Recommended dosage: 5-20 drops 1-3 times per day.

Physical Properties:
Common mallow can be used similarly to marshmallow as it too has a high mucilage content. Traditional uses of this plant include remedying for bronchitis, sore throat, dry coughs, throat infections, asthma, stomach ulcers, acid reflux, constipation, UTI’s and kidney stones. It can effectively calm skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis if taken internally or applied externally. Mallow is soothing for inflammation occouring in the either the urinary, respiratory or digestive systems. This herb is great to combine with most other herbs as most other herbs are drying in some way or another, whereas this herb triggers the body into creating and releasing moistening mucilage. A gently restorative plant that can bring lungs back to a robust state where they have encountered toxins, as well as rebuild kidneys that have suffered various stressors. Do not take if one has damp/cold lung conditions like a common cold or pneumonia.

Spiritual Properties:
Whilst Mallow does not contain the relevant biochemistry to label it a nervine or sedative, it is nonetheless a very relaxing plant. Oftentimes people struggle to relax due to emotional stress – this is where nervine plants are indicated – though there are some people who struggle to relax due to long experienced dryness and heat in the body. Mallow is like a cool wave that slowly washes over the body to ease these aggravated states… in this way greater mental and emotional clarity can be found since we will know where the physical tension ends and the mental emotional tension begins. Mallow’s soothing properties do of course continue into the mental and emotional realms. It is a highly reassuring spirit that helps us to deepen our inhalations, with a knowing that the forces of nature that have enabled humanity to live up until the present, are still here to nourish and assist us into the future. By enabling a greater trust in the future mallow encourages us to sink a little deeper into the present moment, this slowing down allows our physical body to repair and nourish itself … resting as the Buddhists say ‘in natural great peace’.

- Diabetes: Marshmallow can affect blood sugar control, potentially lowering it too much.
-Surgery/bleeding disorders: Marshmallow’s effect on blood sugar levels can potentially prevent blood from clotting effectively when being taken internally.
-Absorption of other drugs: Marshmallow can slow the absorption of other drugs, so it is best to take Marshmallow one hour after taking orally administered drugs.
-Lithium: If taking lithium supplements, or drugs containing lithium, consult with your health care professional to change your dose as Marshmallow can reduce the rate at which your body passes lithium, thus causing a lithium build up.
