Physical properties:
The highly conspicuous flowers of this plant gift us with a diverse array of medicinal properties, many of which are focussed around the heart, being one of only a few plants known to increase moisture within the pericardium – the fluid sac around the heart that allows its constant beating to occour without friction. It can also nourish the heart muscles, regulate heart rhythm, reduce spasm in the cardio system and improve the integrity of blood vessels and capillaries to help with wound closure and beneficial clotting. The flower is said to have aphrodisiac properties, and certainly the bud is quite suggestive and the flower most alluring in its presentation in that regard… Cereus has mucilaginous properties that help to hydrate the reproductive region, and anything that is lubricating the heart can also be considered aphrodisiac. It has proven antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties… just remember that most of the time anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties really means that it enables water structuring, tissue hydration and cellular reformation and cleansing in a way that makes inflammatory and bacterial processes obsolete. In the respiratory system this flower is also commonly used for dry and spasmodic coughs, as well as asthma, and other forms of bronchial irritation from smoke or pollutants. Topically it will soothe burns and scars.

This flower unfurls a very initiatory process within us, it feels as if it opens up our being to receive more of our soul, aligning energy centres and relaxing tensions so that spirit can hum more harmoniously through our being. It brings hints of joy, though mainly of the wondrous kind, where we marvel at the sheer intricacy and grandeur of life, just like we may marvel at the Cereus flowers in the same way. The spine seems to straighten and one’s spirits can lift, even in a very serious time of life, the feeling of a way forward or out becomes more implanted and familiar in ones being. Indeed, when one stares into this flower it is as if they are stepping into a portal, and imbibing it is no different, a real passage to and from the underworld, whatever that may be for you in that moment. Certainly, it is useful for dream work, many dreams that one thinks they have forgotten will come through with persistence. And it enables us to see and feel from the neurons and much more powerful electrical field of our hearts, thus finding a more resonant way through the mire that all of our untethered, disharmonious and fear confounded minds may have created… it is both strong and gentle in this process, as we awaken to the way in which we could be living in greater accordance with our soul, this powerfully ornate flower enables us to be gracious with these realisations, letting them flow lovingly throughout our being rather than being inadvertently frustrated or disappointed with ourselves as a result. It’s as if the plant benevolently says “No, no, we choose love on this planet, and love is not something done in half measures… so let’s just juice that little heart up of yours and get on with it!”
